This week's relaunch of the Machine Mart e-commerce site went without a hitch. The good relationship I enjoy with this client contrasts sharply with the personality clashes I'm experiencing in the Education sector.

I suppose commercial clients are too focused on the bottom-line these days to have time to engage in office politics. And I'm learning fast that it's better to deal with autocratic Managing Directors who at least have their feet planted firmly on the ground.

Energis came down with a bump this week. This dot.com boomer has been struggling for a few months, but when the news broke on Radio Four about the collapse of their share price, I was a bit concerned.

2 years ago the company was valued at twelve billion pounds, now its worth about the size of a National Lottery Rollover. This big league ISP hosts the Headland webservers. It also provides the backbone for Freeserve and ironically The National Lottery.

If the banks decide that enough is enough and they pull the plug on Energis in three weeks time this will leave a huge hole in the UK's internet infrastructure. It will also be the beginning of a period of serious legal claims and counter-claims as clients suddenly find themselves without essential web-services that have taken years to develop.

Scary!

Back to the daily grind and my head feels like a lump of lead. Though I must admit, the hands-on graphics and programming work of the past couple of days has been really engaging and I'll feel like I've accomplished something when Machine Mart's summer catalogue finally goes live. I'm hoping that will be sometime tomorrow morning.

George has been working on the project from Headland's Leeds office and ICQ is a great tool when we're problem-solving. Shame about all the spam though, I guess it was only a matter of time before the porno-marketeers hijacked the system. It gets so bad that sometimes I feel like junking ICQ, but then I'd miss the benefits really, so I guess I'll have to put up with all the crap that goes with it.

Just coming to the end of a long weekend to celebrate my 41st birthday. I can't believe I'm so old?

Daisy of course was quick to announce my age to all the girls in Gilbert's new nursery. We didn't leave Gilbert in nursery today though, he went to town with us and went to a restaurant too.

It's been great spending the last couple of days together as a family, we really don't get the chance to do that very often, we are usually so busy at work. No doubt I'll suffer for the absence tomorrow when I get into work, but what's new?

Saturday evening was good too when Clare and I went up to Chungs (of Mapperley) with Riff and his wife Debbie. It's always good up there. Afterwards we came home and drank every last drop of wine in the house. It must have been a good session because I was washed out on Sunday morning, or should I say afternoon?

Well, now it's back to reality as the 18th February ebbs away....It's late and I'm currently salvaging a load of pics off one of my Mac drives that has given up the ghost. There's about 260 odd files on there that have been scanned for the 80's book so you can imagine that I'm anxious to get them onto a CD-ROM. Sometimes all that teckie stuff I learned at KRCS stands me in good stead.
