KRCS website redesign

KRCS Group is the UK’s longest established Apple reseller. It has eight computer retail stores located throughout the midlands and north of England. In 2010 I helped them redesign their eCommerce store.

I’ve been associated with the company for many years, originally joining them as a design software specialist in 1988, then later working as an in-house Creative Manager from 1990 to 1994 during a period of acquisition and expansion into London and the Home Counties.

In 2007 I helped develop the company’s original eCommerce store. The website was built on Headland Multimedia’s CMS platform and provided an ideal opportunity for Headland’s technical team to extend it’s eCommerce functionality.

The CMS was designed to interface with KRCS Group’s Macintosh-based back-office systems. Merchant services were also configured to allow operations such as part-shipping. Education discounts and linked-purchases were also built into the system.

In 2010 KRCS Group decided to upgrade the look and feel of the site. They wanted to add a top layer of service-orientated content without undermining the existing CMS functions which had proved to be so robust and reliable for over three years.

The resulting design built in conjunction with their marketing team adheres to the house style demanded by Apple, maintaining the look and feel of an Authorised Premium Reseller.

The design was increased to 960 pixel width. Banner Carousels and Newsfeed elements were added to the new homepage. The user-interface was improved and product pages made clearer. Product-linking was introduced to the right hand navigation, thus increasing basket values through cross-selling of related products.

CMS editing functions were also improved in order to minimise the amount of intervention required by programmers thus reducing ongoing maintenance and operating costs.
