George Harrison

George Harrison RIP
[Friday 30th November 2001]

Today, I was saddened to by the news that George Harrison had died after a long battle against cancer. Last January I spent many nights reading the Beatles Anthology, a really engaging book that I read from cover to cover. It's generally assumed that Paul McCartney and John Lennon were the main songwriters behind the group, when in fact, George was a very talented guitarist who made a significant musical contribution to the Beatles hit records.

Perhaps it would be fair to say that George was more enlightened than other members of the band. His sprituality certainly continued long after such things had become unfashionable and it became the cornerstone of his life.

Harrison's musical legacy will always remain dear to those of us who grew up in the 1960's. But at this time of great uncertainty, as we grapple with the ramifications of the new world order and religious fundamentalism, we should carry with us his longstanding desire for peace and his final wish that we should learn to 'love one another'.
