The warm hat and anorak was obligatory during the terrible freeze of winter 1981, when temperatures plunged to 11 degrees below freezing.
In the 1920s, local butchers would have plied their trade from this very spot, and documentation from 1922 lists 68 butchers operating within the notoriously unhygienic Shambles stalls under the old Exchange building, painstakingly knocked down by gangs of sledgehammer-wielding labourers in 1926. |
