Duke of Devonshire public house, Carlton Road, 1988.

This pub, built on the site of William Barnes’s alehouse, is known locally as ‘The Madhouse’ because of the former Lunatic Asylum situated on nearby Dakeyne Street, which opened in 1812. The junction branching off to the right is Handel Street.
