NYC
Tragedy - Comment by Michael Kay Louis
[Dream
target date -16 September 2001]
When the twin
towers collapsed we watched it live on the TV, INCREDIBLE.
But it was impossible to take the size of the tragedy
in. The following day we went up to Highlawn Pavillion
in West Caldwell New Jersey. At this point you're
300ft up and about 30mls from NYC. There was a long
pilgrimage line of sullen people making their way
up to the look out point. A few were chatting over
the small details of a tragedy like this. Where
they were when it happened, the authorities should
be doing more, etc. But it was all just a talking
cure for trying to get through such a huge event.
Then the stunning sight of a huge veil of smoke
hundreds of feet high drawn across the lower part
of the city came into view. All at once the understanding
became apparent, one persons death is a tragedy
thousands are a statistic. Most people were just
standing around not saying very much trying to get
to grips with what they had in front of them. Then
through the eternal silence that surrounded all
of us a plane took off and it's deafening defiant
sound echoed the sentiment - We will go on.
