Dreamtargets Home - Where the art school dance never ends
Paul Fillingham and Chris Richards - AKA Flyo and Riff, Nottingham 1983

Friends - Are you listed?

The Dreamtargets Friends directory was inspired by an exhibit at the Tate Gallery.
Intelligence: New British Art 2000

The exhibit by Douglas Gordon was basically a whole room inscribed with remembered names. An attempt to account for all the people he had ever met in his life.

I was intrigued by this exercise and decided to try it for myself. I recommend you try it sometime and see where your memory takes you!

Ball, Mal

Mal, one of my Dad's work friends was seriously burned in an accident at Blidworth colliery in 1967. He grew a big beard and wore a huge hat to hide the burns. Part of his convalescence was spent with me and Dad touring the sights of swinging 60s london.

Ball, Sue

Leeds Poly, School of Fine Art 1979-82. Sue, a staunch feminist appeared alongside me in Mike Millwards 'City of yes, city of no' performance. For her final degree show she decorated a room with garish wallpaper, silkscreened with an anatomical cross-section of sexual organs during intercourse.

Ballard, Gary

Leeds Poly, School of Fine Art 1979-82. Ex-Sheffield-steelworker Gary Ballard started the course as a man but had a sex change in his final year. Leslie Smith graduated in 1982, her final show consisted of a series of traditional landscapes accompanied by a pair of steel toe capped boots and a pair of stilettoes.

Lesley Smith

  Barker, Freddy

Fred, a Blidworth rogue attended my sixth birthday party. He had a speech impediement back then which caused him to drop the initial sound of every word ie; "is your aul oming oo lay". In later life he had the misfortune of finding the body of one of our friends who had committed suicide.

Clarendon College Department of Art & Design Bench, Peter

Clarendon College Art and Design Lecturer and long-time mentor. Originally from Wales, Pete's mild manner and caring attitude made him a favourite with all who came into contact with him. He was a major influence in my choice of Arts Degree Course and we still maintain contact to this day.

Bexon, Nigel Rock City Futurist circa 1982. This Gary Numan lookalike appeared on TV and in the press on many occasions. Riff knew him from school (Glaisedale Comprehensive) and we used to enjoy imitating his dance-movements. - 1. Stand with legs apart, arms by your side. 2. Slowly draw right arm across lips as if wiping mouth. 3. Change direction of arm to punch the sky whilst singing backing vocal "Woah ho, woah ho", then back to position No 1.
Billham, Anthony Blidworth tough kid from the year above me at school. He recalls me looking up nurses dresses during my stay at Kings Mill Hospital as an infant following a tonsillectomy.
Bingley, Mrs (1) This grey haired sweetshop lady used to supply me and my village school friends with gobstoppers, Anglo bubblegum, Sherbet Dabs, Sweet Cigarettes and a whole range of teeth rotting goodies throughout the early 1970s
Bingley, Mrs (2) Mrs Bingley's sister had a thyroid problem which made her massively overweight. Her hips were so wide that she was unable to get down the gangway of some of the buses that went from Blidworth to Mansfield.
  Bogey-nose, Mr

Cantankerous old codger who used to chase kids off the village playing field with his walking stick. 'I know where you live, I know where you live' he used to say through a river of snot and putty gummed slime. Needless to say kids would deliberately play close to his house to get a reaction.

Bonner, Tony Tony was the Smart Cookies first recording engineer. We worked with him at Lion Studios, an 8-track close to Leeds train station in 1982. We were his first clients to use a TR808 drum machine and it showed. Werecorded and mixed a whole album in a single day!
Booth, Paul Mansfield College of Art contemporary 1977-78. Paul left the course acrimoniously following negative comments from lecturers. He subsequently set up a workshop in Nottingham's Lace Market making clothes for Marc Almond and selling his Brand-X label to both small shops and large mail order operations.
  Booth, Ian

The Smart Cookies third engineer. Ian had worked with guitarist Bill Nelson and helped develop the three-piece acoustic sound that would take myself, Riff and Bob Smith centre stage at the Nottingham's Palais in 1983.

The Smart Cookies 1983

Booth, Duncan Duncan was a Blidworth 'bad lad' from my brother Pete's year at school. He was friends with Pete and could be quite endearing, though his pranks could often turn nasty, like the time he Brillo-padded some kids face. In later life he had a drug problem and died from drug-related causes in 2002.
Bostock, Leigh Leigh Bostock spent his early years in Zambia, later moving into the village in the early seventies where his parents ran a dogs home. He had the appearence of 'Brains' from the kids TV series 'Here Come the Double Deckers' and had some interesting tales about giant ants in Africa.
  Bowles, Ruth

Ruth was a Clarendon College art student in the year below Riff and myself. She had a sweet ginger bob hairstyle and was quite friendly for a time. Her Mother was a Jehovas Witness which scared me somewhat.

Boyes, Alison Alison was a Joseph Whitaker sex vampire who used to turn up at six-form parties. Some of these were held at the Chamber's household in Eakring and it was at one of these events that she cornered a helpless Riff.
Bradshaw, Sandra Sandra was a Whitaker kid and a tough girl from Rainworth who wore a Northern Soul overcoat. Like many Rainworth girls, you wouldn't mess around with her!
  Braithwaite, Suzanne Joseph Whitaker Contemporary.
Bramwell, Michael Michael was a lanky, bespectacled schoolkid from the village, the tallest boy in our class at Infant school, through to Whitaker Comprehensive.
Brandon , George George was the smallest boy in our class at Infant and Junior school. He came from a large poor family and took alot of knocks at Joseph Whitaker which could be an unforgiving place. Amazingly he survived and has gone on to better things. He is no longer poor and no longer short!
Bristow, Billy Billy Bristow was the arcehtypal games teacher. He was diminutive and wore Hank Marvin specs. He was just a little too enthusiastic about sharing the showers with younger boys. I had a real problem with that.
Brocklehurst , Cyril Cyril was an aged photographer who worked at Nottinghamshire Fire Brigade Headquarters. He was my first boss at my first proper job. I worked as an assistant alongside David Halls. He was a dirty old bugger who used to make us laugh. He had a massive cupboard containing tons of badly-exposed pics.
  Brooke , Ralph

Rudolph Brooke, a name attributed to his bulbous boozer's nose was a tyrannical headmaster. He grilled us during morning assembly and could be quite aggressive. I later discovered we shared the same birthdate and to my surprise in my final year at Joseph Whitaker he advised me to go to art school.

Blidworth Miners Mural

  Brown , Gary

Bodzer Brown was Blidworth's dozy punk and in my brother Pete's school year Dressed in the appropriate manner he worked really hard on getting his hair to stand on end. He had a variety of pets including a snake and a pit bull terrier called Zero. I always suspected he was more intelligent than he let on.

Zero

  Brown , Katherine

KB was my guardian angel at Clarendon College. High School educated and something of a wild child, her work area in the art department was strewn with clothing and looked like a teenager's bedroom. She was the one who would give me a smack whenever I got too pretentious.
