Friends - Are you listed?

The Dreamtargets Friends directory was inspired by an exhibit at the Tate Gallery.
Intelligence: New British Art 2000

The exhibit by Douglas Gordon was basically a whole room inscribed with remembered names. An attempt to account for all the people he had ever met in his life.

I was intrigued by this exercise and decided to try it for myself. I recommend you try it sometime and see where your memory takes you!

  Canelly, Mrs

Blidworth childhood taunt 'Mrs Canelly, she's got a fat belly, it wobbles like jelly'. Provided endless hours of entertainment for young schoolboys walking to Robert Jones Junior School. Stones aimed at her front door would guarantee a chase by the unwashed, bespectacled giant lady or one of her unwashed sons.

  Cann, Peter

Clarendon art history student in the year below us. This brilliant alcoholic secured a job at the Courtauld Institute London, but was later found hanging in his parents chemists shop in Nottingham.

Courtauld Institute

Capper, Timothy

Ginger haired boy from Fishpool (Ravenshead) who gave me a run for my money with his great draftsmanship and rival Junior School cartoon strips. We lost touch when he was passed his 11 Plus exam and was sent to Grammar School.

Carter, Laurie

London-born, Leeds Fine Art Contemporary. Laurie (Lawrence) Carter was the archetypal pacifist, rock-orientated, smelly art student hippy. He lived on the Scottish island of Iona on many occasions where he was known as 'Dingbat'. We lived in the same student hall (Becket Park) for a time in 1980 and I last saw him by coincidence outside the Photographers Gallery in Covent Garden in 1985.

Carter, Vicky

My first year tutor at Joseph Whitaker Comprehensive. Mrs Carter was a 'matter of fact' science teacher who had the unenviable role of teaching sex education.

Carter, David

One of the Directors at Chilwell-based Midland Video (Later Quadrant Video Systems). MidVid was an important supplier of pro-video equipment when I worked as a video editor during the mid 1980s .

Caunt, Bert

Bert was a Nottinghamshire Fire Brigade officer who sported a millitary-style handlebar moustache and struck fear into new recruits. His last major role at NFB was to oversee the Royal visit by HRH Prince & Princess of Wales in 1985.

Chanbers, Tracey

Lifelong friend and teenage sweetheart. Tracey was a student at Joseph Whitaker. Her teenage parties in Eakring became a magnet for Sixth Form Pupils, young students and countryside bikers. She later trained as a beautician and now lives and works alongside her husband BJ in Newark, Notts. AKA Tracey Hughes, TC.

Chambers, Mandy

Mandy was more 'punky' than her sister Tracey, but became a high achiever in the field of law. She lived in the USA for a time, but moved back to the UK.

Chambers, Rowan Tallest of the tall Chambers sisters, Rowan now lives in Papplewick.
  Chambers, Karen

Youngest of the Chambers sisters. During the early 80's she provided a link with teenage pop magazines. Now lives in neighbouring Hucknall.

Chambers, Pat Tracey's 'jolly' Mum was always generous and tolerant with her daughters friends.
  Chambers, Roy

Father and chauffeur to the Chambers sisterhood. Roy was a village bobby in neighbouring Bilsthorpe. After retirement from the force, worked in Skills and Training. Now living in Saltburn.

  Chappell, Glen

Ex-Mansfield College of Art contemporary from the late 70's. Worked several years as an industrial photographer with British Coal before setting up various studios in Nottingham and Edwinstowe. Now works freelance and has embraced digital photography. We have collaborated on many projects over the years. He lost his 'shutter-finger' a few years back whilst inspecting the blades of a petrol lawnmower!

  Church, Marilaine

Canadian-born drama lecturer at Clarendon College during early 80s. Had a full-on 'Darling' voice and taught me and Riff radio production and scripting techniques during 'Elective' lectures 1979-80.

Clarendon College Drama Workshop 1980

Clamp, Dennis Gentle giant. Broke my humerous during Whitaker School changing room hi-jinx, thus heralding a lifetime of recurring shoulder dislocations.
Clamp, Basil Dennis's Dad. A Polish immigrant (after WWII) Basil was an odd-job man and window-cleaner in the village when I was a kid. He had a great accent, looked unshaven and wore a flat cap at all times.
  Clapperton, Paul

One of Peter Fillingham's school-friends, Paul Clapperton lived on Appleton Road, Blidworth. He came from a Geordie family and had some interesting phrases. I recall him once saying that his baby brother had "Pappered his pants".

  Clark, Tim

When KRCS Group acquired the London-based SAMS Apple Computer Group in 1992, Wimbledon-based Tim Clark became Marketing Director of the merged company. Myself and KRCS (Nottm) contemporay Kate Smith worked with him on many new marketing initiatives. Tiny Tim was a great manager and we learned a great deal from him. He later moved to Compaq where I dealt with him during an interactive project involving Boots Company Plc in 1997.

  Clark, Emma

An early internet and IRC user from 1996 who made the transition from cyberspace to real-life friendship. I have followed Em's progress as a teacher and London-printmaker for many years. We have attended a couple of exhibitions together and her Blog (Procrastination in Action) continues to entertain me.

  Clark, Simon

KRCS Apple Computer Engineer (Nottm) and joker. In the mid 1990s Simon surprised us all when he announced that he was leaving to become a lay-preacher.

  Clark, Peter

Simon's Father also worked at KRCS. An old-school typographer, he helped usher in the desktop publishing revolution with his Macintosh evangelism. We did IPEX88 together at the NEC Birmingham when such technology was 'cutting edge'. He was also a keen windsurfer and could often be seen at Colwick, Nottingham on his board.

  Clark, Sean

Friend, programmer and internet pioneer. Sean was Research Fellow at Derby University when I first contacted him for help with my first website! He later left academia and became a key figure in the development of Headland Communication's multimedia and web business. Sean left Headland in 2000 to concentrate on his own creative projects and continues to host his Cuttlefish website.

Cuttlefish Digital Arts

  Clarke, Marcus

Friend and mentor from Mansfield College of Art 1977-78. Marcus was a charismatic mature student who was a great influence on me. He got his big break working with Jim Henson on Little Shop of Horrors and developed as a professional puppeteer. He runs his own production company 'Hands Up Puppets' and has worked on many Children's TV shows.

Hands Up Puppets

  Clarke, Len

President of the National Union of Mineworkers, Nottinghamshire Branch in the days when the NUM was still a force to be reckoned with. Len, presented me with Honorary membership and a commemorative Davey lamp in 1977, for a mural which was produced for their Notts Headquarters.

Clarke, Adrian

Joseph Whitaker School contemporary and 6th Form Joker.

  Clay, Steven

Childhood friend from the mid 1970s. We played war, built dens, made 8mm movies and ran the 108 Club for the rest of the village kids. He served in the army for many years eventually leaving to become a policeman in Aldershot.

The 108 Club

Clay, Shaun Steve's younger brother was always too young to play with us.
  Clay, 'Clank'

Steve and Shaun's Dad worked as a petrol tanker driver for Total. Occasionally he'd bring his tanker into the village, when we would climb all over it like insects. 'Clank' was one of my parent's friends from the late 50s, but he rose above the pit-village culture and moved to a (posh) council house on Central Avenue.

Clay, Mandy Childhood friend and neighbour of my ex-wife Tracey Macdonald. Mandy was always aspirational and 'horsey' and moved out of Arnold in the late 80s to live in the country.
  Clay, Gary

Childhood friend and neighbour of my brother-in-law Mark Macdonald during the 70s-80s. The two of them went through all the Star-Wars and trials-bike stuff that was typical of 80s youth. An unlikely 'superstud', comical Gary fathered several children and became a commercial plumber.

Clayton, Sandy

Young Joseph Whitaker teacher and pubescent heart-throb in the mid 70s, Sandy later became a Drama lecturer in Coventry.

  Cole, Moira

Departmental Head and matriarch. Moira contacted me in 1978 to offer me a place at Clarendon College as an alternative to Mansfield College of Art where I had just given up the Graphics Course in favour of further academic study. I needed more O/A-levels in order to progress as a Fine Art Student, so I jumped at the chance. I remained indebted to Moira for making such a fantastic adventure possible.

  Corky

Wayne Evans' Mum's budgie Corky 'Corkeh' was well known to fans of Wayne's band GAFFA

GAFFA Play Clarendon

  Collison, Amanda

Receptionist at advertising agency Cross Hill Conwill during the mid-1990s.

  Conwill, Mike

Mike, a tall, dashing creative with an eye for design detail and great copy was Art Director at leading Notts advertising agency Cross Hill Conwill. He ran the Raleigh Bikes and Development Board for Rural Wales advertising accounts which both became testbeds for my newfound HTML coding skills. CHC became known for its forward-looking vision and I was appointed Director of Multimedia by Mike in 1995.

Cooper, Lindsay Bulwell-born Clarendon College contemporary and joker. Lindsay went on to study textiles at Huddersfield Polytechnic 1980-83 and now works as a teacher in the South of England..
Cooper, Chris

Lindsay Cooper's younger brother Chris was obsessed with music and nightclubbing and later appointed himself as the Smart Cookies promoter, something he did with great success and flair. Chris (AKA 'Dolphin' on account of his pegged-teeth and smile) later joined us in our student house in Chapeltown, Leeds, where we enjoyed several months of complete madness. A keen Adventure Scout, Chris now lives in Mansfield and works as a Corporate Training Consultant.

  Cooper, Terry

Blidworth villager, classmate, bad-lad and adult re-offender. Terry is a loyal and loveable rogue whose flawed criminal exploits never fail to reduce me to tears of laughter

  Cooper-Tedd, Margaret

Californian born and bred, Marky was a Clarendon College contemporary. A mature student who grew up in Marin County during very strange times, she introduced me to the works of American beat poet and writer Richard Brautigan. Marky lived alone with her daughter Phoebe and like any self-respecting UCLA student from the 70s, she regularly attended sessions with a psychiatrist and often showed up at college in floods of tears.

  Crompton, Simon

Leamington-based multimedia guru and co-developer. Simon is Director of multimedia production and training company, Symbiosis. We met at KRCS in 1994 and we have worked on several multimedia projects over the years, including; Boots Sunshop, European Gas Turbines, Rufford Ceramics Centre.

  Cross, Richard

Managing Director at agency Cross Hill Conwill. Suited straightman to Mike Conwill's off-the-wall bohemian attitude. Sold out in the early 00s and moved to France where he runs a hotel/restaurant.

  Crowe, Jennifer

Graphic Designer colleague at Nottingham Fire Brigade 1984-85.

  Curtis, Tony

Psycopathic Laboratory Technician at Clarendon College. I worked with Tony from 1985-1988. He was diminuative, rotund, humourous and aggressive!d. He used to work in 'Destructive Testing' in Oz. Tony lived in Ilkeston and liked to drink and party. He later fell for his young Assistant Nichola and they became a curious double-act - the 'DrWho and Ace' of the science block.
