Joe Strummer
lead vocalist and guitarist with legendary punk band
the Clash died of a suspected heart attack on Sunday
22nd December aged 50.
Formed
in 1977, the band first performed under the name 'The
Clash' at the Mucky Duck in Sheffield alongside the
Sex Pistols. Vitriolic classics like 'Career
Opportunities (the one's that never knock)' spoke
for a generation of disaffected youth who grew up
in England at the end of the 1970's, lending
a political voice to punk's apparent nihilism.
Strummer's lisping
hollow tones and chopping guitar riffs formed the
basis of powerful anthems such as 'London Calling'
and the dub-inspired 'Rudy'. With this level of gutsy
musicianship the Clash were destined to
rise above their art school roots and achieve hugh
acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic.
Although he was almost
ruined by drug addiction in the early 1990's, Strummer
returned from the wilderness a couple of years back
with a new band The Mescalaros, tapping into the rich
vein of 'world music'and once again giving his all!
